Post subject:  Notes from meeting with James Doherty 26 February 2013

Beware of people knocking on your door asking if “Joe Bloggs” lives here or has a parcel been left here by mistake – these are probably occupancy tests. They would knock on the front door and if no reply, break into the house from the back. These are primarily daytime crimes between 10 am and 6 pm.

If this happens to you or you see a stranger knocking on the door of an empty house and you are suspicious, please telephone 101 giving as much description as you can about the person, age, height, build, ethnic appearance, what they were wearing and direction of travel. All this information helps to build up a case. This happened in Higher Green recently.

Put high value jewellery in the loft.

Make sure you have locked your cars at night. James said we would be horrified if we saw how much activity was going on at 2 and 3 in the morning.

Don’t leave anything visible in the car as thieves go round trying doors for an opportunity to steal things. A stranger with a rucksack on his back could be trying to collect small items from cars.

Put a burglar alarm box on the wall, even if it is a fake one.

Dogs are not necessarily a deterrent; burglaries have been committed in the area where dogs have been given treats so the burglar can come in safely.

Although you should use the phone no 101 to report anything suspicious, you should ring 999 if a crime has been committed. It seems that young white males from outside our area are targeting us, James stopped two known burglars from London in the village just the other day but they had nothing incriminating on them, but he asks that we are vigilant.
